Evaluation Report – Heathkit SB-220 – Modified for 6 Meters

Summary:

• It looks like the original amp had a fire in the tank circuit, and someone gutted it and used the tubes and power supply  to cobble a 6 meter amp out of what could be salvaged
• Given the tubes and layout, it would probably do close to a Kilowatt on 6 meters as long as it remains in operable condition. 
• As a working amp, probably $600-$800 if you can find someone who is willing and
  prepared to accept a questionable heavily modified amplifier.

The Heathkit amp is basically an “it is what it is” situation. My best guess is that it looks like the original amp had a fire in the tank circuit, and someone gutted it and used the tubes and power supply  to cobble a 6 meter amp out of what could be salvaged.  As far as I could tell, it lights up and didn’t blow any fuses or smoke out when I turned on the B+ voltage to the tubes, so it would probably work if someone has
a 100 watt 6 meter exciter to drive it. 

I would not, however, imply any kind of warranty, and any sale should come with a clear disclaimer that this is a home brewed project, even though it looks externally like a genuine SB-220.  Given the tubes and layout, it would probably do close to a Kilowatt on 6 meters as long as it remains in operable condition. 

As far as value, that’s hard to say. There are probably easily $800 worth of parts there, should someone buy it for parts,  As a working amp, probably $600-$800 if you can find someone who is willing and prepared to accept a questionable heavily modified amplifier. I will say that the thing should blow everybody off of the 6 meter band with the power it can probably put out.

Owner’s Note – This SB-220 may or may not work. The tubes are being included with the amplifier for free as to offset the risk of it not working.

Evaluation Report – Tubes for SB-220

Evaluation: 3-500 ZG Tubes for Heathkit Amp

The two 3-500 tubes appear to be new and never used. They are original
Eimac tubes and appear to be a matched set that was bought as spares for
the Heathkit amp. These tubes are still in demand and should easily
bring $500 for the pair.

Evaluation Report – Mirage D3010

Here is the info on the Mirage 70cm amp,

This is regarding a model D3010 Mirage amp for 70cm FM or SSB operation.

Amp works and appears to be almost new condition. This is a highly
marketable product and would be useful to anyone who works the 70 CM
band, including repeater operators.

They currently list new, on MFJ’s website, for $770. In my opinion, this
one, in as-is condition and without any warranty, could bring at least
$500.
